Presupposition Satisfaction
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper the satisfaction approach towards presuppositions is made more compatible with some empirical phenomena by assuming that (i) contexts should contain more information than they are usually said to contain, (ii) that the idea that contexts represent what the speaker is assuming for the sake of conversation should be taken more seriously than is usually done, and (iii) that not all presupposition triggers behave in the same way.

A note on presupposition accommodation
The proviso problem arises for theories of presupposition whose projection component fails to derive certain presuppositions that are contributed by their constituent sentences. Mismatch-based satisfaction theories respond to the difficulty by tying the emergence of the proviso problem to presupposition accommodation. Consequently, when the context entails the projected presupposition and no ac...

In this paper we would like to deal with interaction of presupposition triggers and show that the binding theory of presupposition comes up with it better than the satisfaction theory. In section 2, the newly developed presupposition conception is introduced. Section 3 explains the Binding Theory in contrast with the Satisfaction Theory. In sections 4 and 5, Kamp's new idea about the treatment ...

In this paper, we present a critique of the uniform treatment of nominal and adverbial quantification in van der Sandt’s binding theory of presuppositions. We develop an alternative account of adverbial quantification framed in terms of Beaver’s reconstruction of Karttunen’s satisfaction theory. This account provides a simpler characterization of adverbial quantification that does not require r...
متن کاملIncremental vs. symmetric accounts of presupposition projection: an experimental approach∗
The presupposition triggered by an expression E is generally satisfied by information that comes before rather than after E in the sentence or discourse. In Heim’s classic theory (1983), this left-right asymmetry is encoded in the lexical semantics of dynamic connectives and operators. But several recent analyses offer a more nuanced approach, in which presupposition satisfaction has two separa...
متن کاملPresuppositions, provisos, and probability
Theories of presupposition in the tradition associated with Karttunen, Stalnaker and Heim relate presupposition satisfaction to the content of conversational participants’ epistemic states, usually modeled as sets of worlds. However, converging evidence from recent work on modality and from other areas of cognitive science suggests that epistemic states are better thought of as having the riche...
